You Can Improve Education in Timor-Leste. Here’s How.

You Can Improve Education in Timor-Leste. Here’s How.

It’s that time of year again where charities and causes from every angle are asking for your tax-time contribution. And for a good reason; all donations to charity over $2 are tax deductible. But how many charities are truly transparent about where your donation goes? And how many charities can honestly say that your donation contributes to sustainable development that has impact for generations?

We’re calling on Australians to help improve education outcomes for young people in Timor-Leste by making a tax-deductible donation before July 1. Your donation will directly impact young people in remote communities by supporting the placement of three experienced pre-school, primary and secondary teachers.

Since independence was re-established in 2002, development has had mixed results in Timor-Leste. While some sectors have moved ahead rapidly, growth in education is slow, with around 45% of the national population having had no formal education. This situation is worse in the rural districts.

There is hope however among the youthful majority (70% of Timorese are under 30) who exhibit a passionate determination for learning, which is enthusiastically supported by their families and communities. Reflecting their past struggles and present obstacles, most Timorese people value education as essential to gaining employment opportunities and escaping the poverty cycle.

This year, Palms Australia has placed three experienced pre-school, primary and secondary teachers in remote communities in Timor-Leste to mentor and support teachers, improve English language skills, share best-practice teaching methodologies, develop curriculum and provide quality education.

Timorese teachers directly mentored by these volunteers will be empowered for life with adaptable teaching strategies for the changing classroom environment. As teachers themselves feel more engaged, they will be inspired to expand education programs and further develop syllabi in new ways that continue to inspire, engage and educate Timorese people. Students taught by these volunteers will receive a high-quality, consistent education that they will carry with them throughout their lives.

These volunteers have the potential to change lives, but they can’t continue without your support. Every dollar we receive before July 1 will help us cover the costs associated with placing and supporting our development volunteers. You can help fund these placements by making a tax-deductable donation below. Find out more about our current placements here.
