News: Volunteer now for 2010

Participants at a Palms course
Palms Australia is still seeking volunteers for placements in Uganda, Ethiopia, PNG, Kiribati and Timor-Leste in 2010.

“We have filled a number of placements already and are looking forward to preparing and sending some excellent volunteers next year,” says Daniel Gilfillan, Palms’ Country Programs Officer, “but there are still many more requests from global communities for skilled volunteers.”

Palms will be conducting its 90th volunteer Orientation Course from January 8th to 16th, and welcomes participation by those committed to volunteering in 2010 or just wishing to explore their options.

“The Palms Australia Orientation Course is essential preparation for people seeking to work cross-culturally,” Benjamin Oh, Palms’ Community Education Officer and course coordinator, explained.

A later course in 2010 may also be run, although this will depend on the number of applications received, so “people considering volunteering next year should take the opportunity that our January course provides.”

Palms has recently uploaded new profiles of volunteers travelling to PNG, East Timor and Uganda to its website, with more soon to follow.

There is also a list of current requests for volunteers though this is not an exhaustive list of placements Palms Australia wants to fill.

Volunteers with health, education, administration, community development and trades and technical skills are all required. Interested people should either call Palms Australia on (02) 9518 9551 or complete an online enquiry form.

What a terrible thing, to have lived quite comfortably, with no suffering, not getting involved in problems, quite tranquil, quite settled,
with good connections politically, economically, socially, lacking nothing, having everything. - Oscar Romero
