Palms’ A.G.M. to Feature Keynote Address on Refugees

Duncan McLaren from Australian Catholic University will address Palms’ members at the 2009 Palms Australia A.G.M.

Duncan recently contacted Palms to request a volunteer teacher to work tutoring refugees in camps near the Thai Burma border.

Duncan was previously Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis, so has a deep understanding of different models of development which allowed him to recognise the compatibility of Palms’ model with their education project.

The refugees are of the Karen ethnic group and have fled conflict and persecution by the ruling military junta in Burma.

ACU is offering distance education through online diplomas to inhabitants of the refugee camps. Palms has recently placed Frank Morgan to tutor in the camp.

Come along to hear both about ACU’s project and how such work fits with Palms’ model of development.

Palms Australia’s 2009 A.G.M. will be held on Thursday 1st October at 7pm at Palms’ offices at 2A Woolley St, Glebe.

Drinks and finger food will be available from 6:30pm.

Members and non-members are welcome, though are requested to RSVP by Monday September 28th. RSVP either by calling (02) 9518 9551 or emailing Palms Australia
