Millennium Development Goals

In 2000, countries around the world agreed to work together to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

These 8 goals were seen not only as desirable but also achievable by 2015 if developed and developing countries worked together in a concerted effort.

Palms Australia too is committed to achieving the Millenium Development Goals and then continuing the work to "Make Poverty History".

Each of our volunteers is working in partnership with local communities to achieve some of these goals. At times the volunteers contribute to sustainable development in other ways beyond the scope of the MDGs, but the importance of achieving these goals is central to our work.

The 8 MDGs are:

MDG 1Eradicate Extreme Hunger and Poverty

MDG 2Achieve Universal Primary Education

MDG 3Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

MDG 4Reduce Child Mortality

MDG 5Improve Maternal Health

MDG 6Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases

MDG 7Ensure Environmental Sustainability

MDG 8Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Click on any of the MDG icons above to see how Palms' volunteers are contributing to achieving the goal.

Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man made
and can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. - Nelson Mandela
